Is the 12vdc/10a outlet in the box always on?

Thinking of putting a solar panel to trickle charge battery and keep my dashcam running longer in parked mode.

It is not. it shuts off with powering down of the car.

You could try plugging it into one of those portable batteries for cell phones if you want to keep it powered for longer while the car is off.

That's what I was afraid of... oh well just means a little more complication in the plan. I'll spend some time on this probably april-may before summer.
