Bought this android auto dongle off AliExpress and was shipped out today. Finally i have the Android auto up and running in 2018 C-HR
I took the radio out and plugged the adapter at the back of head unit so it doesn't sit in the middle making noise while going on bumps. Also, it let me connect my phone to factory USB port

The head unit you put in doesn't have Android Auto already?

What's the purpose of the dongle? How does it function?

Head unit itself doesn't have built-in android auto or carplay capabilities. Rather these chinese android head unit mostly come with a mirroring app which os some what useless because you can't minimize that window.
With the dongle you can play android auto and car play via usb to head unit and use the head unit as well while android auto running in the back ground.
