Towbar fittting,cost and warranty issue.

Due to pick up a "new" CHR next month (north west UK) and i emailed

Toyota to get info on towbars, the reply was not what i expected in that

Toyota had NONE!! and to contact your dealer was their answer.

The fitting and sourcing of a towbar is easy.however the "warranty" on

the CHR may be affected. Advice and cost etc more than welcome.

I had mentioned this when doing the deal, the agent just on a "nod

and a wink" suggested to go to local towbar supplier.Just to make

clear i use a small trailer for general rubbish etc not for pulling a

In North America, Toyota clears states that the CH-R is not recommended for towing. While towing something small like that obviously won't hurt anything, the presence of a towbar could cause a dealer to refuse any warranty claims, just as an engine mod or some such thing might do. I found a few suppliers who have class-1 towbars, but honestly they extended far down below the rear bumper to the point I'd worry about ground clearance around speed bumps.

I just installed a Curt class 1 tow bar on my C-HR myself. There are no ground clearance issues at all. Even over speed bumps. I've had some discussions about this situation as to why North America has different messaging than European/overseas markets. Here in North America, towing of any sort is not recommended in the manual. But in Europe/overseas, their manuals state towing up to 1500lbs is acceptable. I also seem to recall some discussion on another forum where Toyota dealerships in Europe were installing Toyota sanctioned tow bars and accessories. I tried to locate it, but can't seem to find it now.

I've been told by eTrailer installation of a class 1 tow bar in keeping to the max load of 2000lbs for towing and 200lbs for tongue weight will not put any extra strain on the drive train or the chassis.

I installed mine more for a bike rack. But might see myself using the car to tow a motorcycle on a trailer.
