Could The C-HR Be Affected By Kobe Steel Scandal?

Kobe Steel is Japan's third-largest steelmaker and supplier of materials to some of the world’s largest airlines and automotive manufacturers. Recently the company has come under fire for falsifying data about the quality of aluminum and copper it sold. Some of which was purchased by Toyota.

“Data in inspection certificates had been improperly rewritten ... and the products were shipped as having met the specifications concerned,” the company said. These certificates accounts for 19,300 tons of aluminum products, 2,200 tons of copper products and 19,400 units of aluminum castings manufactured between September 1, 2016 and August 31, 2017.

Toyota confirmed that the affected aluminum plates were used in the construction of “hoods, rear hatch, and front door hinge components of certain vehicles.” Though no list of models were released by the automaker so we don’t know if the C-HR contains said aluminum.

However, Toyota has investigated the matter themselves and claim the aluminum plates were found to meet satisfy both statutory regulatory standards along with their own internal standards. Not ending there, Toyota will continue to identify the full impact of the data falsification reports extending to non aluminum materials purchased from Kobe.

C-HR is not affected by Kobe Steel Scandal.

The only model in Toyota affected by this case is 2016+ Prius. Nonetheless, most of the Lexus models are affected instead of ES.

When you have a car maker as big as Toyota and Lexus is, often it doesn't have much of an effect at all, the majority of buyers don't know. Its just like with any product where there's a small group of people that do research and learn enough about the product and brand that they're more educated than the people hired to sell it to you.
