C-HR Hy-Power Concept To Debut At Frankfurt

Toyota plans to debut two new vehicles at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show, a C-HR Hy-Power Concept and the next generation Land Cruiser.

Currently the C-HR is sold in two flavours. One is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder naturally aspirated unit paired with a CVT transmission, sending 144 hp and 139 lb-ft of torque to the front wheels. Then there’s the hybrid powertrain, which combines a 1.8-litre petrol with an electric motor to deliver 120hp and a fuel sipping fuel economy rating of 74.3mpg.

As there’s already a hybrid variant available, one can only assume that the “Hy” in the new concept stands for hydrogen power. A reasonable expectation as Toyota was betting on hydrogen fuel cells for a while. In fact, the Japanese automaker along with Daimler and BMW is leading a group of 13 companies who pledges to invest more than $10 billion in the next five years for hydrogen technology advancements and infrastructure-building.

Of course, this is just a guess and we’ll hear more about the C-HR Hy-Power Concept once the Frankfurt Motor Show kicks off with a press day on September 12.

Hydrogen power is great and all with how fast it can refuel your car, but with the expensive stations, it's not as feasible as installing chargers. I'd rather see a plug-in hybrid or full electric.
